When it comes to sales I would tell you that it’s not my strong suit, I am not a great salesman.
However, when you look at the following sales statistics, you might be surprised by what you see!
Sales is all about persistence, that ability to continue when giving up feels like the best course of action.
Now of course we need to be selling a good product, and we need to believe in the product, but even if that was the case how many of us would only make one attempt and then give up?
When you look at the fact that only 2% of sales are made on that first sales attempt it’s no surprise that we failed.
Which also means that it doesn’t make us a bad salesperson. It just means that we have completed the first step of the sales processes. A process which, it looks like, involves being turned away at least 4 times before we get into a position where we can achieve the sale.
In order to be successful we need to complete the full process which involves making 4 or more attempts to complete the sale.
I find these statistics very interesting because I would say that persistency is one of my key attributes, which would make you think that I would be a good salesman. However, when it comes to sales I am anything but persistent.
Possibly because whilst I am able to persist in the face of failure, failing sales seems more like a rejection that a failure, which for some can be harder to take than for others – I know it is for me.
The challenge is that for entrepreneurs and all businesses, sales is like oxygen, without it they die.
Sales are crucial to both sustaining and growing the business.
It’s also interesting that 48% of people never follow up with a prospect. If you don’t even start the process you definitely have no chance of being successful.
So if you want to be successful in sales, you need to follow up on your prospects and successfully get rejected at least 4 times until you can successfully close the deal.
