When we set goals for ourselves, we must ensure that they become Milestones rather than Millstones.
A millstone is an issue that we have that stops us from achieving our goals.
When we establish a goal for ourselves, it can be intimidating if we don’t have a clear plan for how we’ll achieve it. If we don’t, we’ll wind up focusing on the “what” rather than the “how,” and it’s focusing on the “how” that will ensure we meet our goal.
When I started this blog, I did it as a means of putting myself in a position to write the book on leadership that I had always wanted.
Previously, whenever I focused on writing the book, I found it a daunting task as it’s such a major undertaking.
Where do you start, how long should it be, what do you focus on, the structure, the key messages, the text, all of these thoughts led me to writer’s block, and thus it became a Millstone hampering my progress.
By starting this blog I was able to just focus on writing my thoughts down, in no particular sequence, in short posts covering any subject that took my fancy.
I also received positive feedback, from people both reading and commenting on my posts, which encouraged me to continue.
Now I have written hundreds of posts, which for me is a major Milestone.
I had written significantly more than I thought I would ever be able to write and that put me in a position to start thinking about writing that book I always wanted to write.
Sometimes we just have to dive in with only a rough idea of where we want to go, dip our toes, take a suck it and see approach.
If we focus too much on targets they can become Millstones and stop us from achieving the Milestones we dream of.
