Leadership is an extraordinary human quality, and leadership in the face of adversity is inspirational. Women have traditionally been side-lined throughout history, however, there are several extraordinary women who have broken the mould and become leaders in their respective fields.

In the field of science one of the most well-known names is that of Madame Marie Curie. Along with her husband Curie invented two radioactive elements; polonium and radium and is currently the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences.

A Hollywood beauty and a great mind, Hedy Lamarr led the field in technological advancement. The former starlet developed an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping which went on to pave the way for today’s wireless communications.

In medicine Pilipino Fe del Mundo has the honour of being Harvard Medical School’s first female student, however, she earned the title due to the fact that the university didn’t realize she was a woman. A great medical mind and caregiver, del Mundo founded the first paediatric hospital in the Philippines

Lord Byron’s daughter didn’t follow him into the arts. Ada Lovelace became a renowned writer and mathematician. She is the world’s first computer programmer.

Eva Peron (Evita) may be remembered through song, but the First Lady of Argentina was a leading politician and philanthropist founding a charity and the nation’s first large-scale female political party.

Inventor and civil rights activist Madam C.J. Walker became America’s first black female millionaire. As the illiterate daughter of freed slaves Walker fought with the NAACP to make lynching a federal crime, paving the way for advancements for the African American populace.
