First of all I want to say that I don’t see Leadership as good and Management as bad.
In order to be successful we need both Leadership and Management. Leadership ensures that we do the right things and Management ensures that we do the things right.
Managers ensure that we are efficient, they ensure that we do the things right, and great managers ensure we do the things right, the first time”.
However, if we are not doing the right things then we are not being effective.
There are both bad leaders as well as bad managers and what we need are for both to be good because if we can do the right things, right the first time, then we will be highly effective.
I have worked in many companies where we were highly efficient, but not all were highly effective.
In one company where I worked, they were very proud because over 90% of all orders were delivered to the client within the agreed timeline. They asked me what I thought, whether I felt that was good performance. I said “I don’t know”. The manager in questions said to me, “but 90% is always good performance”.
I said “ok, let me ask a question, of the 10% of orders that fail to be delivered in time, were they the most critical orders”.
The manager said, “I don’t know”. to which I replied, “then I still don”t know if 90% is good, because if the most critical orders are in the 10% that are late, then maybe we have been focusing on the wrong things” i.e. we have been efficient, but not effective.
Shortly after we did a detailed analysis, splitting the orders by criticality/priority and reviewing delivery rates for each group. What we found was that people were focusing on the orders they could deliver quickly and easily in order to hit the target of 90%, rather than the ones which were most important for the client.
We changed the reporting to report on the different categories and over the next few months what we saw was a drop in the overall delivery rate down to 85% delivered in time, but an increase in the most critical deliveries to 95%.
For me this the difference between leadership and management.
To give the management credit though, after we saw the benefits of segmenting the deliveries by priority, we also segmented them by team to see whether there were any team who were not performing at the standard that we were looking for. Taking this approach we were able to highlight teams that needed assistant or further training and what we saw was an overall increase to 95%.
Through both good leadership and good management we had become efficient and effective and this led us to being highly effective.

It was all about finding the blind spot and asking the right question which most people tend to avoid…..leadership and good management goes hand in hand…good leaders without good management supports losses the motivation as to move the things management support is mandatory…good article…
Exactly, Leadership and management go hand in hand. There is a tendency for people to complain about management, but i think the issue is bad leadership, or an absence of leadership.
The perennial challenge is for people trying to make the transition from manager to leader, and the problem here is what makes you a successful manager won’t necessarily make you a successful leader. The problem is further compounded by human nature, when we are under pressure we revert to what we do best and most comfortable with, to try and resolve the problem. So when good managers struggle as leaders and they feel under pressure they focus more on management.
Leadership is being a great example (amongst other traits) which means being responsible for the things that matter, the key criteria deemed to move individuals, the organisation, delivery etc towards a desired outcome, this may require courage especially in organisations that have a culture of underperformance. Courage to do the right thing in often difficult circumstances.
Phil, couldn’t agree more, “the courage to do the right thing in difficult circumstances” is for me a key leadership concept. Often leaders, i use small L here, take the easy option or the option which is best for them personally.
